GoldenGate Supports Sabre Holdings High-Speed Searches in Air Shopping Products
Leader In Data Synchronization Drives Low Fare Lookup on Travelocity, Sabre Airline Reservation Systems and for Travel Agents Globally
San Francisco, Calif. - November 3, 2003 - GoldenGate (www.goldengate.com), a leader in data synchronization software, and travel commerce leader Sabre Holdings, today announced that the GoldenGate Data Synchronization solution has been deployed to deliver Sabre Holdings Air Shopping products. With GoldenGate deployed within an innovative new architecture combining a cluster of HP NonStop systems and a commodity server farm of low-cost Unix and Linux systems running MySQL databases, Sabre Holdings is able to instantly process low fare searching and itinerary pricing for traditional travel agencies as well as online travel sites, including Travelocity. Sabre Holdings has long set the gold standard for data movement in the airline industry, and the new Air Travel Shopping Engine (ATSE) platform leverages strategic vendors that use open systems to achieve high performance and real-time data availability while keeping implementation costs as low as possible.
The ATSE platform implementation, originally launched on the HP NonStop systems in Summer 2002, moved forward in record time. Because Sabre Holdings Air Shopping products are highly CPU intensive, the company decided to port them over to the new architecture based on the Linux servers and MySQL databases. With GoldenGate's cross-platform abilities, Sabre Holdings had no problem with this migration to the lower-cost server farm. The ATSE platform rollout commenced in March 2003 with an initial implementation of 8 HP/UX servers. Sabre Holdings has further migrated to Linux by adding new systems and upgrading PA-RISC server to IU-Itanium for a total of 45 servers. Sabre Holdings expects to add more servers as required to accommodate business growth. Within this architecture, GoldenGate is used to capture database changes made on the NonStop servers and replicate them at sub-second speeds to the MySQL database on the Unix/Linux commodity server farm. Data is replicated continuously around the clock at a standard batch transmission load of 300,000 updates per hour.
"Sabre Holdings is migrating from proprietary platforms to open systems and open source technology to reduce costs while increasing capabilities. This shift gives us a critical advantage, as we serve an expanding base of professional and consumer users," said Craig Murphy, chief technology officer at Sabre Holdings. "GoldenGate has been a valuable intellectual partner in our ATSE platform implementation, vital to our evolving architecture as they continuously migrate and move data at sub-second speeds. Together we are honing Sabre Holdings' competitive edge as we advance our travel commerce technology."
The need for real-time data has grown in the airline industry in recent years as carriers and agents deploy Internet ticketing, scheduling and customer service. Third-party commercial service providers such as Sabre Holdings require up-to-the-second information on flight prices and availability. In order to achieve real-time functionality, Sabre Holdings needed a technology solution that could move data across diverse platforms and provide high-speed performance in an open system environment.
"The type of platform diversity deployed in Sabre Holdings' new Air Shopping products is characteristic of today's high performance enterprise IT projects," said Mike Seashols, chief executive officer at GoldenGate. "To reduce costs and stay competitive, organizations are adopting open systems, demanding more independence and choice when selecting databases and hardware. With its ability to move large volumes of data across heterogeneous systems at extremely high speeds, GoldenGate is quickly becoming a key technology provider within open architectures."
