Kettering Medical Center Network Relies on GoldenGate® to Provide Continuous Availability of Critical Patient Data

GoldenGate Transactional Data Management Solutions Support Continuous Operations for Accessing Critical Patient Data through Major Application Migration

San Francisco, Calif. - May 8, 2006 - GoldenGate Software Inc., the leading provider of transactional data management solutions, today announced that Kettering Medical Center Network (KMCN), an award-winning, comprehensive healthcare network, has deployed GoldenGate solutions to support continuous operations of their mission-critical patient data management system – the GE Healthcare Carecast™ application. KMCN turned to GoldenGate to address the migration of their patient data during a major application upgrade.

A growing number of healthcare organizations are leveraging GoldenGate transactional data management solutions to facilitate seamless migrations and upgrades, specifically to GE Healthcare’s Carecast™ enterprise clinical system. Today, in conjunction with healthcare applications partner GE Healthcare, GoldenGate solutions support continuous operations for critical clinical information systems (CIS) applications across all five KMCN hospitals and area clinics—more than 52 facilities in total.

In the past, to perform maintenance, application upgrades and other system tasks, the IT team was forced to schedule windows of downtime. But as the number of users and the volumes of data on the system increased, the regular maintenance windows became inadequate to accomplish everything, and the performance of the production system began to suffer.

“GoldenGate was instrumental in the upgrade to Carecast™ by rapidly transforming the data and bringing the new systems online with as little downtime as possible,” explained Dan Townsend, Technical Integration Manager for Kettering. “Because of GoldenGate’s unobtrusive change data capture technology, our team was able to accomplish the entire upgrade without creating interruption or response issues on the production sites.” Townsend added, “For the extended network of hospitals, clinics and health clinics, it remained ‘business as usual’.”

More and more healthcare organizations today are upgrading their infrastructure to support disaster tolerance efforts due to stricter government requirements. However, the risk of significant downtime during a system migration is troubling because patient data must be available around the clock. In a healthcare environment, patient safety takes priority over all other issues, and inaccurate or delayed data can literally mean the difference between life and death. Kettering joins a growing roster of healthcare organizations, which includes Montefiore Medical Center, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and INOVA Health Systems, using GoldenGate solutions for smooth systems migrations, continuous availability and disaster tolerance.

“Today, more than ever, IT plays an active role in ensuring patient safety and improving quality of care within the healthcare provider,” said Barry Runyon, Research Director with Gartner. “The integrity of patient data is part of that responsibility. Continuous operations are critical to ensuring the accuracy and availability of patient information.”

“The need for real-time access to critical patient data is now more important than ever for healthcare institutions as they strive to improve their services through new technologies,” said Tim Rathbun, executive vice president of marketing and product management for GoldenGate Software. “The biggest challenge for a major system migration is the risk of lengthy downtime, and it’s a risk that most hospitals can’t afford. GoldenGate solutions minimize downtime. GoldenGate is proud to help healthcare organizations in the management of their patient data and the improvement of the quality of care.”
