Q: Why are most packaged data integration solutions not sufficient to enable a real-time enterprise?

A: Some integration applications, such as ETL, use batch-oriented techniques to move large volumes of data and were never architected for real-time use. Some applications perform real-time integration of data, usually messages, but only integrate small volumes of data — not sufficient for businesses that may need to handle millions of transactions per day. Finally, many applications that capture and deliver data from multiple sources are generally not equipped to handle real-time delivery with high volumes of data. Only a solution that can successfully satisfy the complete combination of speed, volume, and diversity can enable a real-time enterprise.

Although many organizations are moving towards 100 percent real-time operational systems, architects have shown reluctance to include real-time feeds for their data warehouses. However, the benefits of real-time data warehousing are increasing as data warehouse teams are asked to support new customer relationship and supply chain initiatives.
