Overstock.com Overjoyed with Data Management Solution

Few e-tailers have carved a better niche for themselves online than eBay and Amazon. Both of these success stories owe much of their good fortune to brand recognition and exception service records. There is another e-tailer that has gradually cornered its share of the online consumer market.
Overstock.com has made a name for itself offering discount, brand-name merchandise at closeout prices.

Recently, Overstock.com has selected GoldenGate Software Inc. to manage the retailer's high volumes of data across the enterprise. Overstock.com plans to deploy GoldenGate solutions for zero-downtime system migrations, high availability and disaster recovery, and real-time data warehousing, reporting and analytics initiatives. Serving millions of customers via its popular online retail outlet, Overstock.com selected GoldenGate to reduce infrastructure costs, minimize overhead and enable real-time data for enhanced customer analytics.

Overstock.com will roll out the project in several phases. Initially, as e-tailer upgrades from Oracle 9i RAC to Oracle 10g, GoldenGate will facilitate system migrations with zero downtime. Overstock.com will also standardize on GoldenGate for high availability and disaster recovery on its online production sites, replacing home-grown scripts and batch processes for added reliability and efficiencies. And GoldenGate will play a major role in real-time data warehousing for the online retailer - moving data into a Teradata warehouse for performing in-depth customer analytics.

Across the organization, GoldenGate will provide the foundation for Overstock.com to improve operations and better serve its customers. The new data management system will contribute significantly to streamlining its infrastructure, while leveraging existing IT investments for a deeper view of the customer. Ultimately, GoldenGate will enable a scalable infrastructure for performance gains in a distributed computing environment.

As companies move to migrate or upgrade databases, applications, or operating systems, they require a solution that eliminates downtime. Once GoldenGate ensures the new system is up-to-date with the older, soon-to-be replaced system, data transactions from the older system continue to be captured and delivered to the new system in real time until the cutover is completed. The result is a seamless migration for the company and end users.
